→PROJECT TIP: Due to the larger profile and the double thickness of glass, heat the piece slowly. Start at a low wattage and increase in small wattage increments, 30%, 40%, 50%.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1 Measure and mark the pattern on following glass sheets: Clear – one 2” X 1 3/4” White – one 7/8” X 1 3/16” Red – seven 7/16” X 7/16” Green – seven 7/16” X 7/16”
Step 2 Use a glass cutter and cut glass following pattern (FIG 1, which you can find examples in the Pdf. file link found under the project title). For glass cutting instructions, watch a free video at: http://www.diamondtechcrafts.com/default.aspx?page=itemView&itemsysid=186709 . Clean glass using a paper towel moistened with water. Completely dry the surface of the glass with a lint-free cloth.
Step 3 Next, cut a 2” X 2” piece of kiln paper. Remove the lid from the Fuseworks™ Kiln. Place the kiln paper on the kiln base.
Step 4 Layer the glass on the kiln paper. Start with the base, white rectangle. Alternate the red and green squares around the perimeter of the white glass. Top with the clear glass (FIG. 2).
Step 5 Carefully set the base with glass inside the microwave. Cover base and glass with kiln lid.
Step 6 Carefully set the base with glass inside the microwave and cover with kiln lid. Fuse in a 1200-watt microwave at 30% power for 2 minutes, 60% at 1 minute and 30 seconds and 80% for 1 minute. If using a microwave with a lower wattage increase the power percentage but keep the time consistent. PLEASE NOTE: All microwave and kiln combinations will have different firing patterns. Be sure to take careful notes and log all fusing times for future use. PLEASE NOTE: All microwave and kiln combinations will have different firing patterns. Be sure to take careful notes and log all fusing times for future use. After time is up, open microwave and, using Hot Mitts, carefully lift the lid enough to inspect the fusing process. Add additional time in 30-second increments on full power until you achieve the desired results. Remove kiln from microwave using the Hot Mitts and place on a heat-resistant surface. Cool the kiln for at least 30 minutes with the lid on. Removing the lid or peeking under the lid during the cooling will result in your piece cracking. CAUTION: Glass remains hot for a long time handle with great caution.
Step 7 When cooled, write names on the surface of the glass with a Sharpie® Marker. Names erase easily with water and a paper towel. Nest the name holder in a napkin or set on a mini easel, embellished with a small charm and colored wire. A personalized place setting will make everyone feel welcome at your holiday table.
