Materials
- Fuseworks Kiln
- Fuseworks Kiln paper
- Fuseworks Clear Glass
- Fuseworks Dichroic Scrape Glass
- Fuseworks or any other dry-wheeled glass cutter
- Fuseworks Running Pliers
- Fuseworks Hot Mitts
- Studio Pro Wheeled Nipper
DIRECTIONS
Step 1
Place pattern under a sheet of clear glass - diagram 1, lining up the edge of the pattern with the glass. Nip little pieces of dichroic scraps enough to cover the base heart.
Step 2
Using a glass cutter, cut along the dotted line of the pattern, use a running pliers to break out the glass pieces. Cut two of each pattern piece. Glass may have rough edges; these will go away after fusing. Clean glass using lint free cloth moistened with water. Completely dry the glass surface. Fit these pieces as shown in diagram 2. This becomes your base for your heart.
Step 3
Using a glass cutter or wheeled glass nipper, nip little random sized pieces of dichroic scraps.
Step 4
Next, cut one 2” X 2” piece of kiln paper. Remove the lid from the Fuseworks Kiln. Place the kiln paper on the kiln base.
Step 5
Place the clear glass on the kiln paper in the shape of a heart as shown in the diagram. Start fitting the dichroic scraps bits and pieces on top of the clear until it is completely covered. HOT TIP: Try using a different base glass such as white, black or red.
Step 6
Carefully set the kiln base with glass inside your microwave. Cover base and glass with kiln lid.
Step 7
Fuse* using the chart below. PLEASE NOTE: All microwave and kiln combinations will have different firing patterns. Be sure to take careful notes and log all fusing times for future use.
HOT TIP: Dichroic Glass may darken or loose its color if over fired. To prevent this from occurring, reduce the power of microwaves exceeding 800 watts. For example, when fusing in a 1200 watt microwave, reduce power to 70% for the first firing of 2 minutes. After which, you can open the microwave, using Hot Mitts carefully lift the lid of the kiln enough to inspect the fusing process. By doing so, you will release some of the heat from the chamber, resulting in a reduction of the temperature inside the kiln. Return the lid to the base and continue with the second firing of at 100% or full power.
Step 8
After time is up, open microwave and, using Hot Mitts, carefully lift the lid enough to inspect the fusing process. Add additional time in 15 second increments until desired results are achieved. Remove kiln from microwave using the Hot Mitts and place on a heat resistant surface. Cool the kiln on a heat resistant surface for at least 30 minutes with the lid on. Removing the lid or peeking under the lid during the cooling will result in your piece cracking. Glass remains hot for a long time and should be handled with great caution.
Step 9
To finish the necklace either add a bail to the back of the heart shaped drop and slide it on your favorite chain or slip knot a piece of cord to the center of the heart and tie it around your neck.
